Twisters (2024) Movie Review

*Warning this review contains major spoilers!*

Twisters is a reboot of the iconic 1996 disaster film, centering on Kate Carter, a former storm chaser from Oklahoma. Once a promising PhD candidate at Muskogee State University, Kate was on the verge of securing a grant for her groundbreaking research project, "Taming a Tornado." But during a field test with her team—Jeb, her boyfriend; and friends Addy, Praveen, and Javi—things took a tragic turn. Misjudging the strength of a tornado they were tracking, the group encountered a devastating EF5 storm instead of the expected EF1. The tornado claimed the lives of Jeb, Addy, and Praveen, leaving Kate physically and emotionally scarred.

Fast forward five years, and Kate has abandoned her PhD and storm chasing dreams, now working as a meteorological operations officer at NOAA in New York City. She has left Oklahoma, and her past, behind. That is until Javi, the only surviving member of her old team, reconnects with her. Over lunch, Javi reveals that he has been trying to contact Kate and had even visited her mother’s house looking for her. He explains that after their tragic experience, he found new purpose in the military, where he realized that some of the technology he encountered could revolutionize tornado research. Javi has since started a startup called Storm Par, funded by investors, and he urges Kate to come along for one week of storm chasing.

Initially reluctant, Kate is swayed by the thrill of the chase and agrees to join Storm Par for the week. She meets the rest of the team but soon encounters a rival group of storm chasers, the Tornado Wranglers—YouTube-famous and more interested in fame than science, or so it seems. Tyler Owens, the charismatic leader of the Wranglers, tries to charm Kate, but she remains distant, still grieving the loss of Jeb.

As the chase begins, Kate is determined to prove herself and deflate Tyler’s ego. However, she soon discovers that the investors behind Storm Par are exploiting victims of tornadoes for profit, leading her to question Javi's motives. Meanwhile, Kate's initial impression of the Tornado Wranglers shifts when she learns they use their fame to provide food and water to tornado victims, not for personal gain. Tyler even visits Kate at her motel room, inviting her to a local rodeo, where they bond over their shared pasts. Kate reveals that she’s originally from Oklahoma, not New York, and Tyler shares his history of bull riding as a way to conquer his fears. This deepening connection between Kate and Tyler sets the stage for a potential romance.

Their bond strengthens when they work together during a sudden storm to save a mother and her child. Afterwards, Kate confronts Javi, accusing him of prioritizing data over helping people in need. In a fit of anger, she takes Javi's truck and drives to her childhood home, where she reunites with her estranged mother and revisits her old research. Tyler follows her and encourages her to revive her experiment, but Kate is hesitant. Her mother, sensing a potential new beginning for her daughter, invites Tyler to stay for lunch, hoping Kate might find closure and move on from Jeb. By morning, Kate allows Tyler to review her research, and soon after, Javi arrives, ready to support Kate with fresh data. Together, they refine Kate's experiment, symbolizing the growing chemistry between her and Tyler.

As they prepare to leave the farm, Kate promises to visit her mother more often. Tyler hands her mom a Tornado Wrangler branded T-shirt with his face on it, a light-hearted gesture that underscores his affection for Kate. They set off together to chase another storm, which leads them to El Reno, where a massive tornado threatens the town. Kate, Tyler, Storm Par, and the Tornado Wranglers band together to guide the residents to safety inside a movie theater. But when the dust settles, Kate is missing. Tyler and Javi realize she’s taken Tyler’s truck and is heading straight into the eye of the tornado, determined to deploy her experiment. The truck is battered by the storm, but just as all seems lost, the tornado dissipates—Kate’s experiment worked.

As the week comes to a close, Javi drives Kate to the airport for her flight back to New York. He promises to continue their research, but before Kate can enter the airport, Tyler appears to say goodbye. An airport worker orders him to move his car, and as Tyler goes to comply, Javi gestures for him to seize the moment. Tyler abandons his truck and races into the airport, catching up to Kate just as an announcement comes over the loudspeakers: due to the weather, all flights are delayed.

The ending suggests that Kate and Tyler’s adventure is far from over, hinting at the possibility of a sequel, but the unresolved romantic and sexual tension between Kate and Tyler might leave some viewers wanting more. Throughout the movie, their chemistry builds steadily, making it seem like the story is leading to a climactic moment—a kiss that would bring their relationship full circle. However, the open-ended conclusion, while setting the stage for a possible sequel, leaves this tension unresolved, which could leave some viewers yearning for that final, satisfying payoff.
