The Nintendo Switch is NOT USB-C PD compliant, what does this mean?

The Nintendo Switch was released to the market on March 3, 2017, for $299.99. The Switch finally did what the Wii U failed to do, Be both a home console and a portable handheld device. It was Wii U haters and handheld fanboy's biggest dream come true. When the cries and the cheers of the Switch finally died down, problems started to arise. Many owners of the Switch wanted a second dock to have in a different room or to bring with them when they left their house. The problem with the first-party Switch dock was that if you wanted to buy a new one you would have to pay Nintendo $90 and the dock wasn't very portable, to begin with. Sure the dock isn't that big, but if you wanted a small dock to throw into your pocket as you left the house, the dock would be too big. People started looking at third-party Switch docks. A lot of third-party Switch dock started appearing on sites like Amazon.com. Some of them seemed pretty good, having all the same ports as the real Switch dock, but way smaller and cheaper. This just made sense because the real Nintendo Switch dock didn't need to be that big because most of it was just a plastic shell and only a small part of the dock actually housed the ports and other needed parts of the dock. Youtube videos started popping up about great portable Switch docks. When this all started to seem too good to be true, it was and in a major way. This all seemed to have started with the Nyko brand Switch dock. Many third-party Switch docks had seemed to brick many people's Switch consoles. When Nintendo released the Switch, people were happy that Nintendo had dropped the proprietary charger that they once used on the Wii U, 3ds, etc. and that they had moved to using USB-C instead. This was a great idea because a lot of devices such as phones, tablets, and laptops were using USB-C as a charger. This was perfect because that meant that you could have just one cable to bring with you to use for most of your devices. According to the Youtube channel Wulff Den, in a video posted about a year and a half ago, Bob Wulff explained the problem with third-party Switch docks and chargers. He said that Nintendo doesn't use a "regular old" USB-C protocol. Nintendo actually uses something called MyDP meaning that you can't just get any old HDMI to USB-C adaptor, you have to get cable or dock that supports MyDP. He then states that Switch docks need to be plugged in and charging to work. This is because when the Switch is outputting to a TV, it ups the CPU usage to be able to output to 1080p and 60 frames per second. He then talks about how power consumption for the switch doesn't follow any protocol that standard USB-C devices follow. USB-C Power Delivery or USB-C PD is a standard for USB-C ports and chargers to communicate with each other. With USB-C PD, the devices can tell the charger what amount of power it needs to safely charge the device. This is important because you don't want to damage your device's battery or even fry the device. The Nintendo Switch, however, doesn't follow the USB-C PD protocol at all. This is a problem because it causes the Switch to ask for a certain amount of power when in reality it actually needs far less. Like I've said above, third-party docks and chargers have been known to damage the Switch and some times even fry the Switch battery. Nyko is known as a quality third-party accessory maker so their dock isn't bad quality it's just Nintendo not following the PD protocol. Nintendo keeps their first-party charger and dock from hurting the switch by using a proprietary regulator to keep the dock and charger from using too much power. They have most likely done this to make you have to buy the expensive first-party dock and charger. The problem is that Nintendo didn't warn anyone about this power problem and many people have destroyed their Switch because of it. This hasn't stopped companies from making third-party docks and chargers at all. because of this problem some companies are releasing Switch dock replacement shells meaning you can take all the important parts of your Switch dock out of the big plastic shell and put it into a smaller, more portable shell without damaging your switch. This is great except that you either have to take apart your regular Switch dock or have to buy a new Switch dock from Nintendo and pay a hefty price. In the end, if you are looking for a new Switch dock or charger make sure you buy a first-party dock or charger or buy from a Nintendo licensed company like Anker. As always be safe and make sure to protect your Switch or you can spend $299.99 more to buy a new Switch after you brick your old one. If you want to know more about this I suggest watching the Wulff Den video on this subject at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8Tc0DP7IGA&t=27s.
